Why Every Christian Needs an Emotional Go-Bag (and How to Build One)
Hey friends,
I was sitting in a recent meeting when a brother shared a thought that landed right in my heart. He encouraged us to prepare an “emotional go-bag”—those bare spiritual necessities that keep us strong when life gets heavy. Just like we pack physical go-bags with flashlights, water, and first-aid supplies for emergencies, this one protects our hearts and minds.
We already do this so well with our physical bags. Why not give the same loving care to our spiritual “bare necessities”? In these last days, when pressure, fatigue, and quiet doubts can creep in fast, having quick access to truth that reminds us Jehovah drew us first (John 6:44), that we are deeply loved, and that giving our best is always enough… well, that changes everything. It keeps us steady. It keeps us joyful. And it keeps us ready to serve with a full heart.
Let’s talk about why this matters right now—and exactly how to build one that fits your life.
Why an Emotional Go-Bag Matters Now
Life in these last days brings real pressure—trials that catch us off guard, seasons of fatigue after busy service, or those quiet moments when doubt whispers, “Am I doing enough?” One or two minutes with the right scripture or reminder can rebuild strength faster than we think.
I’ve felt it myself. There was a stretch when I was squeezing personal study between meetings and field service, and my heart just felt… flat—just like I shared in our post Feeling Spiritually Drained? 5 Simple Bible Ways to Restart Your Walk with Jehovah. Then I started keeping a small pouch with a few scriptures that always speak to me. The difference was almost immediate. Those words reminded me that Jehovah sees my efforts and that His love is constant, not based on my performance.
This habit also prepares us for whatever lies ahead—just as our organization lovingly encourages ongoing preparedness. When we have spiritual “bare necessities” close by, we stay anchored in the truth that we are chosen, loved, and enough because Jehovah drew us to His Son.
How to Build Your Own Emotional Go-Bag (Simple Steps)
You don’t need anything fancy. Here’s a gentle, doable way to create yours:
Choose a small pouch or folder
Something that fits in your regular go-bag, Bible case, or even your purse. A soft fabric pouch, a small zippered folder, or even a dedicated pocket in your service bag works beautifully.
Stock it with 5–10 key scriptures
Write them on cards or print them small. Include the reference and a short personal note about why it helps you.
Here are a few that have strengthened me (from the New World Translation):
John 6:44 – “No man can come to me unless the Father, who sent me, draws him…” Note: Jehovah drew me first. I don’t have to earn His love.
Psalm 55:22 – “Throw your burden on Jehovah, and he will sustain you…” Note: I don’t carry this alone.
1 Peter 5:7 – “Throw all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.” Note: He actually cares about my everyday worries.
Isaiah 41:10 – “Do not be afraid, for I am with you…” Note: Jehovah is right here with me.
Matthew 11:28 – “Come to me, all you who are toiling and loaded down, and I will refresh you.” Note: Jesus offers real refreshment when I feel drained.
Add your own favorites—whatever always brings you back to peace.
Add printed reminders of God’s love and approval
A short summary or highlighted paragraph from a Watchtower or Awake! article about how Jehovah and Jesus feel about us. These official publications are gold for the heart.
Leave space for your personal reflections
A small folded note that says: “What does ‘giving my best’ look like for me right now?” Update it every few months as life changes.
Keep it portable and personal
Tuck it in your regular go-bag so it travels with you—to meetings, in the ministry, or even on vacation.
Tools That Make Building (and Using) Your Go-Bag Even Easier
If gathering everything feels a little overwhelming at first, these three gentle tools from Dancing Gazelle have made the process joyful and sustainable for me and many sisters I know. Each one is designed to support your personal study and the spiritual tools we already love from jw.org.
Scripture Affirmation Card Deck: Beautiful, ready-to-use cards with key scriptures and soft affirmations. I keep mine in my bag and flip through them in under two minutes when I need an instant reset. It’s helped me live out the principle of filling my mind with “whatever is true… whatever is lovable” (Philippians 4:8) without needing a full study session.
My Emotional Go-Bag Journal: A dedicated journal with guided prompts to choose your scriptures, write why they matter to you, and track how using your bag brings strength over time. The monthly reflection pages are perfect for refreshing your bag every six months with new counsel.
Emotional Go-Bag Digital Template Bundle: Instant printable cards, pouch labels, and a simple checklist so you can start building the same day you feel the nudge. It removes all the guesswork and lets you focus on the heart part.
These tools aren’t meant to replace anything—they simply make the habit easier and more delightful so you actually use it when you need it most.
Real-Life Benefits and Simple Tips
Here’s how this looks in everyday life:
Before a difficult conversation or after a long day in service, reach in and read two cards.
At night when worries creep in, one scripture can quiet the mind and help you sleep in peace.
Share the idea with your family or a friend in the congregation—watching your kids or a sister add their own note is such a joy.
Forward tip: Every six months, take five quiet minutes to review and refresh your bag with the latest loving counsel from our publications. It keeps everything fresh and relevant.
The best part? You’ll start noticing how quickly you return to that steady, grateful place—ready to serve Jehovah with a full heart.
Let’s Keep Our Hearts Ready Together
When we keep our emotional bare necessities close, we stay strong, grateful, and joyful—no matter what these last days bring. We remember that Jehovah drew us first, that we are loved beyond measure, and that our best is always enough in His eyes.
