Preparing for the New Service Year: Setting Spiritual Goals That Stick

Beautiful sunny mountain with winding path leading upward, golden sunlight, clear blue sky, symbolizing spiritual growth and new service year goals

Hey friends!

We’re already in the middle of 2026, and you know what that means? The new service year is just a few months away! September will be here before we know it, bringing fresh opportunities to serve Jehovah with renewed energy and purpose.

This in-between season is actually one of the best times to pause, pray, and prepare. Instead of waiting until the last minute, why not set spiritual goals now that will help you step into September with clarity, excitement, and momentum?

Whether you’re a pioneer, a busy parent, or simply someone who wants to draw closer to Jehovah this coming year, these goals don’t have to feel heavy. They can be life-giving, family-centered, and full of joy. Let’s walk through a gentle, Scripture-rooted way to set intentions that actually stick — plus a beautiful hands-on activity that makes goal-setting a memorable family worship adventure.

1. Start with Scripture: Let Jehovah Set the Direction

Every goal worth keeping begins in God’s Word. As we look ahead to the new service year, Psalm 17:5 gives us a beautiful picture: “My steps have stuck to your tracks…”

What a comforting reminder! We don’t have to figure everything out on our own. When we stay close to Jehovah’s guidance, our steps naturally lead to growth and happiness.

Try this simple three-question framework as you pray about your goals for the coming service year:

  • What area of spiritual growth is Jehovah inviting me to focus on right now?

  • How will this goal help me draw closer to Him and be a blessing to others?

  • What small, consistent step can I take each week that feels joyful rather than overwhelming?

Writing your answers down helps turn good intentions into clear direction.

2. Make Your Goals Specific, Measurable & Joy-Filled

Vague goals disappear quickly. Specific ones thrive. Instead of “I want to be more spiritual,” try:

  • “I will meditate on one Psalm each morning and write down one quality of Jehovah I want to imitate that day.”

  • “I will prepare one extra encouragement for a brother or sister in the congregation each month.”

  • “Our family will add one new interactive element to family worship twice a month.”

Break each goal into tiny monthly actions. The key is choosing goals that energize you and fit your season of life — not ones that add pressure.

3. Build in Gentle Monthly Check-Ins

The secret to goals that last? Regular, grace-filled check-ins. Starting this summer (and continuing into the new service year), try this simple rhythm at the beginning of each month:

Look back with kindness — what went well?

  • Celebrate even the smallest progress.

  • Adjust one thing for the month ahead.

  • Pray over your goals using Scripture.

This keeps you moving forward without guilt and builds beautiful momentum by September.

4. Involve the Whole Family — Make It a Shared Adventure

Spiritual goals become so much sweeter when the whole family grows together. Try a simple “Family Vision Night” once a month:

  • Everyone shares one personal goal for the new service year.

  • Pray for each other’s intentions.

  • Choose one shared family goal (like showing kindness to someone new each week).

Kids especially love seeing their goals written down and celebrated. It turns spiritual growth into a team effort and creates precious memories. To make this even more special and visual, we created something just for moments like these: the Spiritual Goals Mountain Activity Printable.

Inspired by Psalm 17:5 (“My steps have stuck to your tracks…”), this 7-page hands-on pack turns goal-setting into a joyful family worship project. You’ll list short- and long-term goals, write them on the mountain steps, cut out cute figurines, and display the whole thing where everyone can watch progress and celebrate each victory together.

It includes a Getting Started Worksheet, premade spiritual goal ideas with supporting scriptures, and practical tips drawn from the Watchtower Online Library. Perfect for families with young children, pioneers, or anyone who wants goal-setting to feel fun and memorable instead of like another task on the list.
